As a Criminal Defense Lawyer, Roberto Balli recently tried the following case to a jury in Laredo, Texas: United States vs. Gerardo Castillo a.k.a. “Cachetes”:  This case was charged Mexican Drug Cartel Conspiracy involving drug charges, racketeering, and weapons charges. In this case the prosecution alleged that Gerardo Castillo was a hit man for a Mexican Drug Cartel.  The case involved over 30 criminal defendants and a 47 count indictment.  All of the Defendants pleaded guilty except for our client, the Defendant Gerardo Castillo, who opted for a criminal jury trial.  This case was tried in front of a jury in Federal District Court in Laredo, Texas. Roberto Balli was Gerardo Castillo’s lead counsel.  The trial lasted almost two weeks. The jury acquitted Gerardo Castillo of the weapons charges and a motion to dismiss is currently pending on other charges based on Double Jeopardy.  Although Roberto Balli has tried other difficult cases as defense counsel, this case is the most interesting because the allegations in the conspiracy involved several murders, large amounts of narcotics, money laundering and evidence was produced showing how the Mexican drug cartels operate.  Further, this was a case in which no one in the community really thought that we had a chance of winning.

As a Prosecutor Roberto Balli tried the following case to a jury: State of Texas vs. Maria Bondoc:  This case involved the sale and purchase of children.  Roberto Balli started this case as an investigation into illegal adoption and discovered that the defendant was smuggling pregnant women from Mexico into the United States in order to purchase their babies in an illegal adoption scheme.  This criminal case went to trial and the case resulted in an 8 year sentence to Defendant.  Although Roberto Balli, tried many other cases as a prosecutor in which Defendants were given harsher sentences, this case was one of the most interesting and difficult cases because amount of effort that went into the initial investigation.  The investigation involved coordination, with the Laredo Police Department and United States Border Patrol.  Further, the facts and circumstances of the illegal adoption scheme were compelling.
